HALTON INDUSTRY EDUCATION COUNCIL AND ATTRIDGE TRANSPORTATION CELEBRATE THEIR LONG-TIME PARTNERSHIP

Glenn Attridge

HALTON, ON - The Halton Industry Education Council (HIEC) hosted an Appreciation Celebration on Thursday, November 26, 2009 in honour of Attridge Transportation, an event which recognized over 15 years of community partnership. The event focused on honouring Attridge for their commitment to helping Halton's youth. Over 100 bus drivers and office staff gathered at the Atrium Conference Centre in Burlington, where they enjoyed a piece of cake, while Kelly Hoey, Executive Director of HIEC, thanked Attridge and its employees for their dedication, support and partnership.

Over the years, Attridge Transportation has generously donated bussing of grade eights to HIEC in order to make their Grade 8 Career Awareness Program a reality. Without Attridge's generous donation, HIEC would not be able to run its Grade 8 Career Awareness Program. "On behalf of the Halton Industry Education Council (HIEC), we extend our heartfelt thanks to the Attridge Transportation family for your many years of partnership and support of our Grade 8 program and of HIEC," says Kelly Hoey. "Without your generous contribution, our Grade 8 program would not be able to make a lasting impact on the lives of grade eights in Halton."

The Grade 8 Career Awareness Program is a community effort that involves business, education and community partnerships to bring a consistent message to students about the importance of making informed career decisions. Each year, Attridge helps bus over 7,000 students to the HIEC Career Centre - to date over 90,000 students have walked through HIEC's doors to participate in the program.

This partnership has played a major role in allowing HIEC to continue to provide this program to students in both the Halton District and Halton Catholic District School Boards. A visit to the Career Centre gives young people the opportunity to learn more about the world of work and make a connection between that world and who they are. The program, the longest running at HIEC, started in 1993 as a three school pilot, and has since expanded to include all grade eight classes in Halton.

"The career centre helped me to figure out what job I would like to have. It helped me to decide what types of courses I should take in high school. I am excited to start working now." - Grade 8 student

On November 17, 2009 HIEC celebrated its 20th Anniversary and presented Glenn Attridge, Vice President of Attridge Transportation, with an award for his outstanding dedication to HIEC and his commitment to fostering partnerships among industry, education, and the community in Halton. At the recent Appreciation Celebration, Mr. Attridge shared his award with his staff and conveyed his belief in the partnership Attridge has with HIEC and the Grade 8 program.
