Halton Celebrates Experiential Learning and Getting To Know Your Future Workforce
HALTON, ON – On November 25, 2010, the Halton Industry Education Council (HIEC) showcased the benefit of Getting To Know Your Future Workforce by celebrating cooperative education, employer involvement and experiential learning in Halton at the Fall Breakfast with the Mayors event held at RattleSnake Point Golf Club. Hosts Mayor Rick Bonnette of Halton Hills and Mayor Gordon Krantz of Milton brought greetings and spoke about their own unique perspectives on experiential learning, and why they believe these opportunities are essential to future workforce development in Halton.
HIEC, together with their program sponsors The Centre for Skills Development & Training and Sheridan Institute for Technology & Advanced Learning, showcased the continuum of programs and services in Halton aimed at fostering connectivity between employers and their future workforce. The event’s theme aligned itself with the Passport to Prosperity mission of ensuring that every employer in Ontario sees the value of connecting to their future workforce by engaging high school students in meaningful work experiences.
Kevin Flynn, MPP Oakville and Parliamentary Assistant to the Minister of Education was on hand to bring greetings on behalf of the minister. He spoke about Experiential Learning Week, a Ministry of Education led initiative, being celebrated across the province. This week-long initiated was launched to showcase the many successful connections between employers, teachers and students that have been made through the Passport to Prosperity program.
During the event, the Provincial Partnership Council (PPC) honoured the Burlington Post and Managing Editor Don Ford with the Passport to Prosperity Employer Champion award. The award celebrated the Burlington Post's outstanding commitment to providing experiential learning opportunities to local high school students. Don Ford spoke on behalf of his colleagues, thanking the PPC for recognizing their efforts, and encouraged more local employers to get involved.
The Breakfast also highlighted experiential learning opportunities through a panel made up of local students and employers who shared personal success stories. The panelists highlighted many different ways employers can get involved with experiential learning and why these opportunities are beneficial to both employers and students in Halton Region. After answering questions from the audience, the panelists’ message was clear – students need these opportunities and all employers need to get involved.
Rounding out the morning’s program was keynote speaker Ryan Porter, a dynamic young professional who shows students, as well as adults, how to create an exciting future through their experiences. “This generation is going to do amazing things,” proclaimed Ryan during his presentation titled Make Your Own Lunch™. Through a variety of humorous life lessons and adventures, Ryan educated the audience on the impact of personal life experiences and the importance of “not waiting for destiny to happen – just decide to decide.”
