Press Release

HALTON, ON The energy was high and the inspiration contagious at the Halton Industry Education Council's (HIEC) Men as Career Coaches event on Thursday, April 18th 2013 at the Burlington Convention Centre. The event brought together over 350 male high school students and men from the community, showcasing Halton's strong and thriving culture of mentorship. 'This was my first time coming to this event and it was the best night of my life!' said one student attendee. 'This event was very helpful and motivating. It helped me realize to chase my goals and not give up.'

The audience, made up of high school students and volunteers from across the GTA heard from four spotlight speakers over the course of the night, representing a wide range of career pathways. Speakers included Jonathan Hood, Toronto Argonauts player; Hans Gerhardt, Former President and Marketing Director, Toronto's Sutton Place Hotel; Sheldon Walker, Handyman, S.A.W. Renovations; and Richard Cooper, Chairman of the Board, Cardinal Couriers Ltd.

'The speakers were very influential and had many lessons to teach and inspire all of us,' commented a career coach after the program. '[This was the] best year so far!' Along with inspirational videos and several opportunities for the men to share stories, compare generational experiences and inspire one another, the night concluded with keynote speaker Chris Cummins, a professional speaker and author of the upcoming book You Can't Do That! Oh Yeah? Watch Me! 'Chris Cummins is one of the best speakers I've ever listened to,' said one mentor. Chris inspired the audience and proved that passion is contagious with his humorous and energetic keynote presentation.

Men as Career Coaches will be followed up with a number of sector-specific mentorship events, as HIEC embarks on a new project called Career Coaches Unlimited, supported by a grant from the Ontario Trillium Foundation. To learn more or get involved, email
